Pleasanton, CA ValleyCare Charitable Foundation recently received a $23,500 donation for the “Women in Need” fund. The sizable donation came from the recent Tri-Valley Memorial Golf Tournament sponsored by Dentists Against Cancer.

Drs. Jeff Bueno and Tom Sellick founded Dentists Against Cancer in memory of their mothers, Barbara Bueno and Margaret Sellick, both of whom passed away following courageous battles with breast cancer. They decided to help honor their mothers by helping other women in their fights against breast cancer. With the help of numerous volunteers, family members, and friends they are able to contribute all of the money raised directly to their cause. The only expenses they incur are those associated with putting on the annual Tri-Valley Memorial Charity Golf Tournament. The “Women in Need" fund began in 2010 with funding from this same golf tournament and allows ValleyCare to provide financial assistance to underinsured and underprivileged women in need of a diagnostic mammogram if their screening mammograms show area(s) of concern. Since then, the fund has grown and can also help defer costs for wigs, post-surgical compression sleeves, bras and prosthetics for breast cancer patients. Dentists Against Cancer’s fundraising efforts were enhanced this year with a major contribution by Patterson Dental Supply’s Grins For A Good Cause campaign.

With one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S., regular, screening mammograms are time-tested exams capable of detecting cancer in its earliest stages --up to two years before a woman might feel a lump. Since a woman's risk for breast cancer increases with age, experts recommend a mammogram every one to two years for women ages 40 and older.

"The Dentists Against Cancer fundraiser has enjoyed great success and has grown from a $3,500 donation in 2009 to the $23,500 donation today,” says Scott Gregerson, ValleyCare CEO. “We are extremely grateful to Drs. Bueno and Sellick for their foresight and commitment to help these women in need and to partner with ValleyCare. It is through this type of community partnership that gives ValleyCare the edge, enabling us to provide that extra level of care not always seen in community hospitals.”

Women who live in the Tri-Valley and are in financial need for a mammogram or other breast cancer services, can call for more information on how to apply for assistance. Contact Sherry LaSalle, RN, ValleyCare’s Breast Cancer Patient Navigator at (925) 734-3313.
